I've been working on these for the past week when I realized that I haven't update the blog! I almost completely repainted everything!
Well, they are almost done. After applying what I re-learned from my skin-tone study, I'm quite happy with the outcome:
The backgrounds have been better realized, the shirts are better rendered, the keyboard and hands are almost complete and everything just comes together a lot better. Unfortunately my camera-phone doesn't do them justice, and the angle of the light seems to heighten every shadow, they are coming along quite well! I should have them done in the next day or so.

After looking what on the screen and what's on the easel, I can honestly say that the photos look horrible: the subtle colors are gone and the contrast is non-existent. I'll see what I can do for the next update.

I "FORGOT" HOW TO PAINT!!!!

Yup.
You read that correct:

I forgot how to paint.

But don't worry. It's not the "Oh No! My career is Ruined!" its more like "Dear Jeebus! How did I do that again?" Specifically; I forgot how to paint skin tones.

Now, "skin tone" is one of the most over-used and misunderstood statements made. True "skin tone" is made up of thousands (lots of zeros) of different colors, and not just pink! Blues, greens, purples and yellows of varying hues, values and saturation make up these subtle gradations that ultimately make "skin tone"

Another strange thing about "skin tone" is that it is altered based on light conditions. The traditional way of painting portraits in the same light as the sitter means that the colors chosen for "skin tone" will always look like their skin counterpart in any lighting condition.
This is where the disaster strikes...

I've sold all of my portraits from life. As a result I don't have any reference for "skin tone" for the pair of commissioned portraits I'm working on. Since they are based on photographs, I'm having to guess what subtle colors make the skin tone. And since I don't have references lying around, I kinda... sorta... "forgot" which colors were meant for what.

After more than a decade of painting, most of the color making decisions occur almost automatically in the brain: you see a color, you know what to mix to make that color, and you paint that color. If you are working from a photograph for abstract works... its not that important. Colors can be pushed and contrasts tweaked, and indeed whole compositions compromised for the sake of artistic creativity.

In painting a portrait... it's a bit more of a science.

THUS:

I'm taking these couple of days to work on a quick self portrait from a mirror in order to fix my understanding of "skin tone". I'll use the self portrait in order to match colors to those I'll put on the other two portraits to compensate for camera's color processor.

THEREFORE:

I have remedied my dilemma of forgetting how to paint.

Bits and pieces coming together

I finished the book and keyboard as well as some work on the background. The colors in the face are also lightened up and I'm using brighter colors to give the sense of light as well as work on making the shadows less severe.

Since I'm working from a photo, the shadows are always the darker than in real life. A camera isn't able to pick up detail in the dark like the human eye can. As a result, I'm doing a lot of research based on work done from life in order to make sure the colors look correct.

Next I'll continue to make the faces curve around more in space, and make the figures merge more harmoniously with the background.

It sounds like a lot of work, but the result will be amazing!

NEW STUDIO MADNESS!!

I haven't posted in a while. A decidedly embarrassing long time, but I have a reason why:

NEW STUDIO MADNESS

The final week of November was filled with awesome studio-packing chaos, combined with assisting the intro to painting class at the Perpich Center for Arts Education (PCAE). Then there was the building of the 8 studio walls for my comrades, and all the chaos that entails. I ended up pulling a 44-consecutive hour move-a-thon with a 17' UHaul truck.

It was interesting.

My studio is currently mostly up: I have lighting, a computer, and several boxes I assume contain my paints.

The awesome reception area still needs a heap ton of work, but once finished it will be like nothing else. The completed studio will be the combination of nearly every artistic discipline and be totally open to the public. Think designer studio meets fine arts.

So yeah... I'll post some pictures shortly, and also an update of the portrait commission (which I neglected to post prior to Thanksgiving)

I've started tailoring the shirts to fit better and also start better integrating the figures into the background. The underlying colors of the fabric will register on the peripheral of vision, but give them a sense of depth.

LOTS of irons in the fire! And as always, a few disasters along the way. Bad things first: my brother got hit by a truck on his motorcycle while he wasn't wearing a helmet. Him being made out of nails like he is broke his ankle.

Nothing else.

Kids trip while playing kick-ball break their ankles. My brother needed to get hit by a truck to break his!

I finally have a new studio! Deposit and rent are deposited, and will move in December 1st!

ART SALE!!

Yes! Its almost here!! I've been working like a squirrel on espresso making stuff (awesome stuff too!)
I'll be posting those over the next couple days for the pre-MCAD Art Sale.
Final day to buy is Nov 5th!!!! So check back tomorrow for the first of the batch to be completed.

Working on them. Slowly. But working on them. I needed to reference some other examples to remember a few secrets; very worth it. These two are going to be incredible! So they will hopefully be worth the wait.

Face Painting

Started adding the large blocks of color to the face. These facets of color actually are what lends to caucasian skin tone; look at anyone's face and you will see these small patches of color. These will then have their edges blended together and allowed to dry. The next layer will utilize cool colors, and give the painting a more dimensional feel.

Got the background under colors finished. Next up is a light glaze to bring out some of the compositional shapes and starting painting the dark darks of the figures.

This is a nearly finished painting for the MCAD Art Sale. I added an indian yellow glaze and some white accents to make it glow.

Then I'm tweaking an old painting of Cambell's Soup ala Worhol and then I'll be finishing up the commissioned landscape tonight so it has plenty of time to dry before installing on Sunday. I was asked to be in an MCAD art event where I was asked to put up some "pre-Art Sale" stuff for sale. So in good MCAD fashion, I'm quickly whipping out a landscape painting based on one of the unused concepts for the previous landscape commissioned painting in the span of two days. The painting I'm SUPPOSED to be working on is due to be completed this weekend. (Wait other "FFFFFFUUU..." posts over the next few days. :)

But I supposed the old saying rings true: "an Artist with bare walls in his studio is either very successful or very lazy,"

And as anyone reading this knows, I'm not a lazy person.

New toy!

One of my studio neighbors was giving away a very nice shelving unit that had an angled top. I'm not sure what it was originally intended for (computer cart, maybe?) but it makes for a Wonderful palette stand; the angle reduces glare and is more ergonomic than a table. Now I don't have a reason to take a break, as my arm will no longer get tired of holding the palette.

Tiny brushes, Ting Decisions, Big Impact

Just a quick update. The weekend was a little more filled with excitement than I anticipated, and there was that deep need for sleep that I wasn't expecting. Then there was the last-minute call for a logo design for a company and finding out that I need to have a few paintings finished for an upcoming MCAD event.

By Thursday.

THIS Thursday.

I'm also aparently searching for a wedding photographer for a wedding this Saturday adding a bit to my freak-out stress level, but nothing a pot of coffee can't solve.

In any case, I only managed to get to do another 14 or so hours of work on the painting. But they were some good hours. I managed to almost completely plot out the final colors for the clouds, and I resolved a bit more of the left side. As soon as the clouds are done, I can finish the foreground, tweak it a bit, and call it done! Can't wait, this painting is turning out amazingly well!

I need to wait for the first layer to firm up enough to paint the next layer. The pseudofed for my head cold kinda screwed up my whole sleeping thing, so I decided to finish a few ~~plantings~~ paintings for an art event in a couple of weeks.

Once I *finally* take a nap, I'll touch up a few areas, pull off the tape and call it a wrap. By then I'll be able to start another layer on the landscape painting.

Addendum: August 12, 2:44AM

So I was only able to take a 2 hour nap before I woke up with more energy than I knew what to do with. I skipped my last psudofed in hopes of getting some "normal" sleep. That was a 9pm, and seeing how its currently a quarter to three, I highly doubt that will occur.

What have I been up to? you might ask... I honestly don't know. I know I downloaded a nightstand app on my iPad and played around with the clock function until 1pm. I don't know how I lost seven hours playing with a clock, but this pseudofed is scary stuff. Thankfully I think I only need another day of it in order to keep from drowning in my own ooziness. I'll tackle the landscape painting once I return from another nap. Living off of only 2 hours of sleep since Tuesday is kinda creepy. And the worst part is: I haven't had any coffee today.

Yup. Pseudofed is scary!

First Layer done!!!

A nice result after a productive night fueled by pseudofen for a crazy head cold. No coffee needed.

This is what I call the "dead layer" in the sense that while everything is in place on the painting, it still looks a little dead. The next layer will build upon these warm tones with cooler tones that will give a real sense of depth to the painting.

So, no. The painting is not neon. By yes, it is very green right now. A mixture of sap, and Indian yellow allows for a nice undercolor before addng on lighter tones to make those clouds look big and fluffy. Today should be very productive.

I just finished with painting the darkest darks with a combination of Prussian blue, raw umber and greenish umber. These colors will fall back into the painting and give a sense of depth as I lay the lighter colors over it. After it dries, I'll start going over it with cobalt blues, yellow ochres and venitian reds to give it a desaturated color layer before I start putting in the cooler tones of sap green, cadmium yellow and Indian yellow.

Minor mayhem. Accidentally mixed yellow acrylic with green oil for the undertone. Needless to say, it was a mess. Luckily I had water mixable oil paint (crazy, no?) So I added that and the oil molecules where bridged to the water molecules allowing everything to work out just fine.

Painting is also a little about chemistry too!

The stretcher pieces are all built.

Once the entire stretcher is built, the edges
are sharp, which poses a problem when
it comes to stretching the canvas, as the
sharp edges will cause it to rip.

the canvas is stretched tight as a drum. The tools do not
sag on the canvas at all!

The border color is mixed to match the color sample.

the border is masked off.

the border color is hand smeared into the crevices of the
tape to ensure there is no bleed through.

The border tape is painted over and entire canvas is
ready to have a wash of color applied once its dry.

So at around 1am, I decided to take a break and update my OS. Thinking it would be like updating to Snow Leopard, I figured I had half an hour to kill.
Seeing as how I'm updating this at 5:45am, that didn't happen...

Needless to say, Lion doesn't like the concept of "legacy" so most of my programs didn't work, and I'm stuck waiting for driver updates in order for rest of my programs to work. This includes Internet since the driver for my wireless adapter doesn't like the Lion OS. Thankfully, my phone is also a hotspot, so I can get by until driver updates are made available.

In short, if you are wanting to upgrade your OS, please, for the love of everything good and Holy; wait a couple of months for everyone else to catch up.

Been busy a lot lately: work, studio, apt work and girlfriend (no complaints on the latter).

Needless to say, I've been doing more thinking than actual doing. But with the MCAD art sale coming up TOMORROW, I should be able to be doing a lot of things that I've been putting off, like updating the site, posting new works, and creating a new page of things that will hopefully be incorporating QR codes*

*I need to make sure that I can create pages with links that will NEVER change or become deleted.

I've also decided to do more postings on my blog. Possibly posting on arts and technology as well as random rantings of brain explodings regarding my thesis and artist statement; because despite my best efforts, its still a bit all over.

I've been painting pretty much non-stop for the past month and a half. It looks like I won't be reaching the optimal number of paintings for the MCAD Art Sale; I'll probably end up with only 20 or so, but they are going to be quality work.

I've also decided to incorporate the surviving paintings from my senior thesis exhibition into the art sale. This realization came about when I realized that the iPod Touch 4th generation incorporated a retina screen. The importance of this fact is that realization that the level of resolution available to the screen on data phones has surpassed our ability to perceive it; the first step of the singularity has arrived. Therefore, I must now create paintings which will explore and exploit other shortcomings or advantages of data phones alike. The battle continues...

NEW HOSTING!

Good news, I'm changing hosting and the website will be moving everything to stablehost. This means that my website "should" be up by Sunday morning. "Should" is in parentheses because I'm not entirely sure how everything needs to work, so I may be needing some expert help to deal with my lack of computeriness.

And yes, 'computeriness' is a word.

Just looked at an amazing studio in downtown Minneapolis. Looks like I'll be moving tomorrow night to a new 900 square foot studio at 740 N Washington Ave. The good part of Washington, before it gets scary.

I've also completely abolished my original website blog in favor of the much easier to use Blogger. Hopefully now I will make more use of my blog, or at least until I get bored and distracted by all the painting I shall commence.
